Early Years Eduventure: Exploring The World Around Us Through The Young Farmers Programme.

By Ms Alicia Hong

Early Years – Year Leader and Homeroom Teacher.

In Term 2, our EduVenture programme explores the theme “Plants as Partners,” helping students understand how plants support life and why they are important to our environment. Through our Young Farmers Programme at Kebun Komuniti Bandar Sri Damansara (SriNiti), students engaged in hands-on gardening experiences that allowed them to learn about plant growth, caring for living things, and sustainable farming.

During the sessions, students explored the garden and discovered different herbs such as lemongrass, pandan, coriander, and rosemary. They planted kangkung seeds, watered their plants, and learned that plants need sunlight, water, soil, and care to grow. Students also planted shallots in decorated pots and created nature print art using leaves and natural materials, encouraging them to observe the shapes and patterns found in nature.

The garden visits also provided opportunities for students to observe small creatures such as tadpoles, fish, frogs, snails, and earthworms. Through these experiences, students learned that earthworms play an important role in keeping the soil healthy and helping plants grow.

One of the highlights was when students were able to harvest the kangkung they had planted, allowing them to see the journey from seed to harvest and understand the effort involved in growing food.

As part of the programme, students also visited Bug’s Paradise Farm, where they learned how vegetables are grown on a larger scale. They observed plant growth stages, tasted fresh vegetables from the farm, and planted kangkung seeds to bring home and care for. Through these meaningful and hands-on experiences, students developed a deeper appreciation for plants and their role in supporting life, truly discovering how plants are our partners in the world around us.
